The net wealth formula

Net Wealth = Total Assets − Total Debt. PortWorth aggregates every asset class and every liability into a single live figure, updated continuously as market prices move.

ASX equities (live price)Mortgages
US stocks (live price, AUD)HECS/HELP debt

Crypto (live price)Personal loans

Step 1: Investment holdings

Your ASX, US, Raiz, and Crypto tabs feed directly into net wealth with live prices. See the Record a Trade guide for how to add holdings. Once entered, these update automatically every 5 minutes.

Step 2: Superannuation

  1. Go to the Super tab.
  2. Enter your fund name, investment option (e.g. High Growth, Balanced), and current balance.
  3. Enter your employer contribution rate (currently 11.5% of salary in Australia) and personal voluntary contributions if any.
  4. Update your balance monthly by checking your super fund's app or statement. PortWorth uses this figure directly, as it is not fetched automatically.
Accessing superannuation before 65. Super cannot generally be accessed until you reach preservation age (60 for most people born after 1964) and retire. PortWorth includes it in net wealth by default but you can toggle it off the Wealth Summary if you prefer to track accessible vs. inaccessible assets separately.

Step 3: Property

See the full Property Tracking guide. In brief: add each property under the Property tab with its address, type (house, apartment, townhouse), bedrooms, and estimated value. Link each mortgage for LVR tracking. The AI valuation tool can estimate current market value based on recent comparable sales.

Step 4: Cash and savings

  1. In the Overview or Banking tab, click Add Cash Account.
  2. Enter the account type: everyday, savings, offset, or term deposit.
  3. Enter the current balance. Update it monthly or whenever your balance changes significantly.
  4. For offset accounts, enter the offset balance as a cash asset. The mortgage to which it is offset is entered separately as a full balance. PortWorth calculates effective debt as mortgage minus offset when showing LVR.

Step 5: Other physical assets

Use the Other Assets tab for anything not covered by the main tabs: vehicles, private business equity, jewellery, art, wine, gold bullion, or any other asset with value. These contribute to your net wealth total but don't update with live prices, so you set the value manually and update it periodically.

Step 6: Add all debts

  1. Mortgages are added in the Property tab linked to each property. Enter the current outstanding balance, interest rate, repayment amount, and loan type (P&I or interest-only).
  2. HECS/HELP debt: add it in the Loans section on the Overview or Finance tab. HECS is indexed to CPI, so enter your current balance from your MyGov account.
  3. Car loans and personal loans: add each loan with current balance, interest rate, and monthly repayment.
  4. Credit cards: enter the outstanding balance (what you owe, not the credit limit). Update monthly.
Why track debts precisely? Overstating assets or understating debt inflates your apparent net worth. Accurate debt tracking also helps the Stress Test show realistic LVR scenarios and the FIRE Calculator show how long debt repayment extends your independence date.

Toggling asset categories

On the Overview tab, the Wealth Summary panel has toggle buttons for each category (Equities, Property, Super, Crypto, Cash, Other). Toggling off a category excludes it from the net wealth figure shown, useful for comparing "liquid net worth" (excluding super and property) vs. total net worth. Your data is unchanged; only the display changes.

Tracking net worth over time

The Performance tab shows your net worth over time as a chart, with period returns (1M, 3M, 6M, 1Y). Each time you update a balance, it is recorded with a timestamp, so you can see growth trends. The XIRR calculation on the Performance tab shows your time-weighted return including the effect of cash flows like contributions and withdrawals.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include my super in net worth?

Yes, but with context. Super is a real asset that grows tax-advantageously, and for most Australians it becomes their largest asset at retirement. Include it for total net worth; toggle it off to see liquid and accessible net worth. PortWorth shows both views.

How accurate is the property valuation?

AI valuations are estimates based on recent comparable sales from Domain and REA data. They are indicative, not formal appraisals. For important decisions (refinancing, sale), always obtain a formal valuation from a licensed valuer or real estate agent's CMA.

How do I handle a joint mortgage?

Enter your share of the property value and your share of the mortgage balance (typically 50% for joint ownership). This gives an accurate personal net wealth figure. If you want to track the full property, you can enter 100% and note it in the property description.
