What you'll have when you're done

By the end of this guide, your PortWorth dashboard will show a live net wealth figure covering all your assets: ASX stocks, US shares, crypto, superannuation, property, and cash — minus any debt. Every price updates automatically. You'll see P&L, allocation, and portfolio performance at a glance.

Step 1: Create your account

PortWorth is currently in closed beta. Sign up on the waitlist to receive an invitation. Once invited:

  1. Open the invitation email and click your unique sign-up link. It expires after 48 hours.
  2. Set a strong password, at least 12 characters. Use a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, Apple Keychain).
  3. Verify your email address by clicking the link in the confirmation email.
  4. Enable 2FA immediately. Go to Settings > Security and scan the QR code with your authenticator app. See the 2FA guide for details.

Step 2: Understand the dashboard layout

The dashboard is organised into 5 navigation groups with 23 tabs total:

  • Overview — your net wealth summary, allocation chart, and recent activity
  • Holdings — CommSec (ASX), Stake (US), IBKR, Raiz, Vanguard, Crypto
  • Assets — Property Portfolio, Purchase Calculator, Other Assets
  • Finance — Banking, Budget, Expenses, Cash Flow, Vault
  • Analysis — Performance, Portfolio X-Ray, Super
  • Research — AI Research, News

On mobile, navigate using the bottom tab bar. On desktop, use the left sidebar. The header always shows your current net wealth figure and a live price-freshness indicator.

Step 3: Add your ASX holdings

The CommSec tab tracks your Australian share portfolio. You don't need to connect your CommSec account. You enter holdings manually, which means your broker login is never shared with PortWorth.

  1. Go to the CommSec tab and click Record Trade.
  2. Enter the trade details: date, ASX ticker (e.g. VAS, CBA, BHP), number of units, price per unit in AUD, and brokerage ($9.50 default).
  3. Add all your buy trades in date order for accurate FIFO CGT tracking. If you've been investing for years, start from your earliest purchase.
  4. For DRP (Dividend Reinvestment Plan) trades, select the DRP trade type. These create new cost-basis lots at the DRP issue price.
Tip: Rather than entering trades one by one, use Import Trades to upload a PDF contract note or a CSV export from your broker. CommSec's full transaction history export (available from the Activity tab in CommSec Online) imports in one go.

Step 4: Add US stock holdings

Use the Stake tab for US stocks purchased via Stake, or the IBKR tab for Interactive Brokers positions. Both support mixed AUD and USD holdings.

  1. Go to the Stake or IBKR tab and click Record Trade.
  2. Enter the ticker and trade details in USD. PortWorth automatically converts to AUD using live FX rates for your net wealth summary.
  3. US P&L fluctuates with AUD/USD. Even if the stock price is flat, your AUD value changes with the exchange rate. This is normal and correct.

Step 5: Add crypto

The Crypto tab supports any coin listed on CoinGecko, covering Bitcoin, Ethereum, and thousands of altcoins.

  1. Click Add Holding and search for your coin by name or symbol.
  2. Enter your total units held and average purchase price in AUD.
  3. For exchange-held crypto, enter the total balance per exchange. For cold storage, enter the wallet balance directly.

Step 6: Add superannuation

Go to the Super tab and enter your current superannuation balance, fund name, investment option, and employer contribution rate. PortWorth tracks super growth over time and includes it in your net wealth and FIRE projections.

Step 7: Add property and cash

Real estate and cash complete your net wealth picture. See the Property Tracking guide for full instructions on adding properties with linked mortgages. For cash, go to the Overview tab and add your transaction accounts, offset accounts, and savings accounts.

Step 8: Set up your budget

The Budget tab is where you track income and spending. See the Budget & Cash Flow guide for setup instructions including recurring entries and savings targets.

You're all set

Your Overview tab will now show a complete net wealth figure. Prices refresh every 5 minutes during market hours. Explore the Analysis tabs to see your portfolio performance, concentration, and fee drag. When you're ready, try the FIRE Calculator to see how far you are from financial independence.

Frequently asked questions

How long does setup take?

Most users complete the initial setup in 15–30 minutes. If you have a large trade history (5+ years), allow an hour to enter all trades accurately for CGT purposes.

Do I need to enter every trade, or just current holdings?

For current net wealth, entering today's holdings and average prices is enough. For accurate CGT calculations, you need to enter individual buy and sell trades in date order. The CGT tool uses FIFO matching which requires the full trade history.

Can I import my trade history from a CSV?

Yes. PortWorth supports both PDF contract notes (individual trade confirmations) and CSV transaction history exports from CommSec, Stake, and IBKR. Click Import Trades on any holdings tab to upload.

Is there a mobile app?

Yes. PortWorth is available on the App Store for iPhone. You can also add it to your home screen as a Progressive Web App (PWA) on any device by tapping Share → Add to Home Screen in Safari, or the install prompt in Chrome.
